This course is devoted to learning about the human vocal mechanism, the sounds it can produce and how those sounds can be classified (auditory and articulatory phonetics). The lecture also provides an introduction into the disciplines of phonology and sociolinguistics. You will learn to produce and recognise the sounds of the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) that are relevant for common varieties of English. You will also become familiar with ways of describing and transcribing these sounds. The lecture is interactive and you will be expected to attend and to actively participate in the tasks and discussions.
