    3. Body composition – assessment and optimization – 2nd May 
    4. Practical session – Measuring resting and exercise energy expenditure and body composition – 9th May
    5. Macronutrients: carbohydrates and fats – 16th May
    6. Macronutrients: Protein - Nutrition for optimal protection and recovery from the injury – 23rd May
    7. Practical session – Creating a meal plan for an athlete – 30th May
    8. Micronutrients seminar – 20th of June
    9. Hydration – 27th June - guest lecture 
    10. Food first approach in high-performance sports – date will be defined - guest lecture 
    11. Specific considerations in elite sports - seminar – date will be defined

     

  • Course organization

    Module leaders: Dr Tim Meyer and Dolores Dravinec, MSc, PhD student in Sports Nutrition

    Module help and coordination: Dr Florian Beaudouin

    International guest lecturers: will be announced

    • The course will take place every Monday from 11th of April until 27th June 2022 (excluding 18th of April - Easter Monday) from 2:00 – 4:00 pm in the facilities of the Institute for Sports and Preventive Medicine, room 022. In a case, in-person teaching is not possible (due to the COVID regulations) teaching will be done online on the TEAM’s platform.
    • The module content will be divided into 10 topics which will be covered in the form of lectures, seminars, and practical sessions followed by discussions and guest talks.
    • Recommended key literature: a textbook Sports Nutrition (Jeukendrup and Gleeson, 2019) - can be borrowed in the University library or purchased online - https://us.humankinetics.com/products/sport-nutrition-3rd-edition-epub
    • Additional recommended literature: papers and videos which will be uploaded on Moodle
    • For the exam, students will be asked to write an essay – a critical review on a certain topic or a nutrition guideline and a meal plan for a certain sport. More information will follow.
  • Learning outcomes/skills

    After completing this module, students will:

    • have a fuller understanding of international recommendations on sports nutrition and energy delivery in sport
    • appreciate how nutrition and sports performance are linked
    • have acquired a systematic overview of the subject matter, methods and principles as well as the problems and areas of application of dietetics in high-performance sport

    After completing this module, students will be able to:

    • describe, apply and critically assess different forms of diet and nutrition in a variety of sports while taking account of cultural differences
    • asses, implement and evaluate dietary programmes for specific purposes or to meet specific objectives in different seasonal cycles

    - 100% of students were fully satisfied with the practical information provided.

    - Students especially liked guest talks and practical sessions and suggested another practical session.

    NEW in summer semester 2022

    ! We have decided to introduce a new practical session on meal planning and creating a dietary plan for an elite athlete and to introduce new guest speakers, experts in the field of sports nutrition.
